The Percy P Wood Collection

We were lucky enough to purchase a large portfolio of work by Percy P Wood (c. 100 items)
All were completed in the 1920’s-1930’s
Percy was - during The Great War - a POW at Ruhleben Camp, near Spandau, in Germany. He was primarily a cartoonist and caricature illustrator and while in the camp he was one of 3 POW artists who helped to produce the magazine for around 5000 POW’s.

Percy was born and raised in Hull..and had an equally talented sister, Adele Wood...some of whose work is included here too as her pieces were included in the portfolio. Percy’s work was usually signed “PodWop”..an amalgam of his initials and surname.
On returning to the UK after WW1, Percy settled in Plymouth, Devon..living in the Devonport and Stoke areas of the city. On his return to the UK he produced a lot of cartoon and caricature artwork in the twenties and thirties and the work we have here is from this period.
We believe he may have retired to Dorset as one of the envelopes in this large batch of work was addressed to him there. Our research indicates he died in 1955.

We are gradually getting the photography for this huge portfolio done as of 1st Jan 2012, so keep checking back!
